Okay, so with OC down right now, my source of info is gone. I am contemplating changing the cabin air filter, but cannot find instructions on how. Has anyone already done it? Is it easy enough. I remember some saying something about cutting a bracket/brace...which the dealer said as well, but they want $105+ to do it. I have bids on one on ebay, so I just wonder will I be able to change it myself, or am I making a trip to the dealer?

The following is from WikiAnswers:

To replace the cabin filter on the 2005 Odyssey, the glovebox access is different than earlier years. To drop the glovebox, you must release the damper arm. This is accomplished by first removing the retainer cover/clip which slips over the end of the rod and post (pull/slide off the end of the rod). You must then remove the door stops (2) by prying inward on the tabs inside the glovebox. The glovebox will then lower to reveal the the filter housing. Push inward on the release tabs on eaither side of the housing and slide it out.

(NOTE: When I contacted the local dealer I was told that there was a dash brace in front of the filter housing that would have to be removed by sawing it out. He said that the brace was used during assembly of the vehicle but was not needed in operation. My 2005 Odyssey did NOT have such a brace.)

When inserting the new filter into the filter rack, be sure to place the end pleats into the slots provided. This assures that all air will go through the filter.

Replacement for a 2006 Odyssey is similar to the 2005. There are NO dash braces to cut/remove. As an alternative to removing the two door stops in the glove box (mine did not release easily), one can also remove the two 8 mm screws at the bottom and work the entire glove box out of the dash. This also allows the contents to remain inside the box (useful if its full of stuff).

Hope this helps.....sorry no pictures....

yeah, I saw that...just hoping to find some personal experience...but I guess not enough ppl know about this site yet.

BTW, I see you're in OP, FL. I am just across the border in K-Bay. Been down to OP many times.

I haven't done it yet on my Ody, but did do it on my Element and it shouldn't be a big deal, and certainly not worth $105. You can get a Honda or aftermarket filter from HandA for about $28 or $16. As for how, I have these instructions:

To drop the glovebox, you must release the damper arm. This is accomplished by first removing the retainer cover/clip which slips over the end of the rod and post (pull/slide off the end of the rod). You must then remove the door stops (2) by prying inward on the tabs inside the glovebox. The glovebox will then lower to reveal the the filter housing. Push inward on the release tabs on eaither side of the housing and slide it out.

As an alternative to removing the two door stops in the glove box (mine did not release easily), one can also remove the two 8 mm screws at the bottom and work the entire glove box out of the dash. This also allows the contents to remain inside the box (useful if its full of stuff).

Removing the box will allow access to the filter door.

When inserting the new filter into the filter rack, be sure to place the end pleats into the slots provided. This assures that all air will go through the filter.

Here's the diagram. #7 is the door and filter holder, and #8 is the filter.

it is extremly easy..probably take you less than 5 min after you know how to do it. The instructions bigfoot had posted is basicly what you do. the glove box stoppers might be hard to remove tho..but after a few times it gets eaiser since you'll know the way it comes out.

I know on our 07 it takes longer to empty the glove box than to change the filter. Drew:)

When I changed my cabin filter on my Element at 25,000 miles I was amazed at how dirty it was, so these things do actually work, at least with the windows up!

Yep, super easy to access the CAF on my 2008. You really should pull them and at least shop-vac them off once or twice a year. You'll know when your CAF is really plugged with debris by the diminished air flow from your HVAC system. You can also cut and use decent furnace filter media for CAF use (if you wanna go ghetto :p)

for your 08' did you have a cabin air filter?...cause i think for the 05-07 LX models they didn't come with one

On my '05 Element EX, I didn't change the cabin filters until I hit 30K miles. I can honestly say that I won't wait that long again. They were definitely very dirty, and to think, that's the air you're breathing inside your own vehicle!

Oh khrap! You're right! CAFs currently only come on EX+ models. I was staring at a blank cover type thing. Funny though. My cheapy, no options, $12K Cobalt has a CAF you access the same way; drop the glove box down, open the door and slide it out.

You can install a cabin filter - just use a utility knife to trim out the square blanks that are in the existing holder.

From Honda Service News:

"Can I Install a Dust & Pollen Filter in a ’05 Odyssey LX?
If you’re asking yourself this question, the answer
is YES. The LX trim level doesn’t come with a dust
and pollen filter, but you can add one by installing
a Blower Lid (P/N 80291-SHJ-A41, H/C 7721459)
and a Dust and Pollen Filter (P/N 80292-SHJ-A41,
H/C 7721467) used in EX models. Make sure you
remind your customer this filter should be
replaced every 30,000 miles or 24 months,
whichever comes first."

Thanks HT and ND. Good info! If she wasn't a lease, I might consider it. Honestly though, I've had a few vehicles now with CAF's. I'd rather do without!

I changed the filter on my dads 2001 tahoe a couple of days ago. It is the first time it has been changed. It has 94,000 miles on it. Those filters were brown. There were leaves in there too.

You guys have convinced me to give this a try... I really access the glove box from the engine compartment???:D

It's all from the inside. Why do you think it was from the engine compartment?

Many thanks to all who helped me with changing my filter. It was easier than I thought. In fact I believe it will now be easier and quicker to change than my whole house filter. At least I don't have to get out the ladder to change the Ody's. :)

I am somewhat active over at the CRV-OC, and I dropped in here to see how the Ody Club was doing. From reading the early posts and looking at the diagram, the cabin filter on the Ody look similar to the CR-V. I wrote a tutorial with photos over at CRV-OC. While it may not be exactly the same, it may be close enough to help. The tutorial is at:

My 2008 has a cabin air filter which I just changed at 17,000 miles. It wasn't very dirty and those glove box cover stops were very hard to remove.

I resorted to mremoving the two 8mm screws and removed the whole box.

yes, it's very dirty, it takes me time to clean it

1. First, clean out the glove compartment.

Remove the cap on the damper rod by pulling it towards you.

2. Pull damper rod away from stud.

3. Pop the right side drawer stop loose while holding the compartment drawer up slightly to take the weight off the stop.

5. Remove both drawer stops.

6. Let the compartment tray swing and hang all the way down.
The air filter is located in the wide rectangular compartment.

robot202

7. Press the clips on both sides of the compartment to slide out the filter tray. I could not press both at the same time and take this picture!

8. The LX model van does not come with a filter installed from the factory. All more expensive models will have filters installed.

robot202

9. On the LX model van you will need to remove the 9 plastic squares. This tray is made from very soft plastic. The squares are held in place with very small tabs of plastic that is very easy to cut with small wire cutters. All other models this step is not necessary.

10. Install a new cabin air filter in the tray and slide it in into the AC unit. Cabin air filters are available at most car part stores. I have found the price to vary between $10 to $30. Shop around.
Reverse all the steps to reassemble the glove compartment.
I change my filter once a year and it is fairly dirty after 12 months.
