Hi folks...just purchased a 2008 Odyssey with roof racks that don't look too sturdy for hauling a couple of canoes. On my old Previa we had a Thule rack installed that actually needed to be drilled right into the roof, with an extra wide cross bar for two canoes to sit side by side. Are there any paddlers out there who have found a good, safe set up using the existing roof rack that comes with the EX-L version?
Thanks
Neil

I made a canoe rack for my Odyssey. I used 1X6 cross members (fence boards actually) that I stiffened by screwing on a 2X2. I notched the 2X2 so that the gunwales of the canoe sit down in the notch. I installed eyebolts through the wood just outboard of the gunwales to allow using a ratchet strap to hold the canoe down tight to the boards. I then fit it all up and drilled through the 1X6 on either side of the Ody rack side rail where the 1X6 crossed over it. I then use tie wraps through these holes to attach the 1X6's to the rack rails. It all goes together quite quickly with no ropes to measure out or knots to tie and I have not noticed any sign of anything working loose or starting to slip. I use rubber pads between the wood and the rack rails and felt pads between the canoe and the wood to eliminate squeeks.
I carried my 15' grumman aluminum canoe this way and then with a few mods to the notches I now carry my 13 Foot plastic Old Town.
