I have a 2002 Odyssey LX and I want to know if I would get better fuel mileage when traveling down a good hill with 2 mile runout if ......

1) Turned engine off, trans in Neutral

2) Engine on, trans in Neutral

3) Engine on, trans in Drive

In all conditions no throttle applied.

I had an Accord that I thought that I would try that on to save a little gas. I shifted it into Neutral at the top of a mile long downhill portion of freeway. When I got to the bottom of the hill, I pulled it back into gear. It switched into low gear and with the engine racing and the tires squealing , it immediately began shifting up through the gears. It was quite a jolt and I don't know why it did that but I won't try that again.
