Currently, we have a 2005 Odyssey EX, which is primarily my wife's ride. I have an '07 Ridgeline & my daughter has an '06 Accord Coupé EX-L. Since 1985, we've had eleven Hondas.

The Ody is our fourth Odyssey & our "Odyssey odyssey" deserves to be told. We bought our first Odyssey in 1996, a 1st generation 4-door. Beige metallic. At the time, my daughter was beginning to compete gymnastics seriously & my wife wanted something a bit bigger than her Accord for the incessant traveling to workouts & meets.

It met its end on 25 October 1997 when my wife was cut off while crossing a 4-lane & got hit by a woman in a Buick. The side-impact door beams & air bag worked flawlessly & my wife was not hurt even though the Buick hit right behind the driver's door going about 35 mph. Unfortunately, the little Ody was frame-bent.

We immediately put in an order for another one. After quite a wait -- a couple of weeks but seemed like forever -- we got our 2nd Odyssey. This was a '97 in a kind of weird "eucalyptus green" color. We put over 100K miles on it in 3 years.

The next Odyssey was our 2nd generation, a true "2001 Odyssey." Gold. This was hands-down the best one we've had. It clocked in 80K miles in two years. At that time, offspring quit gymnastics, so my wife got an Accord Coupé. She handed that off to my daughter two years later when we again needed a minivan (this time to haul elderly parents).

The '05 currently has about 56K miles on it, is usually pretty dirty (constantly in use) & consistently gets 24-26 mpg. It runs real good & has hauled everything from 8 people to a full dorm room full of junk to deliveries for a florist.

My wife has said that she hopes that this will be her last minivan. She's tired of being mom's taxi. She wants an Acura MDX :D

As long as it's a Honda, I say!

Hiya, I'm sorry to hear what happened to your wife in your 1st gen Ody, but I am really grateful you posted this info.

My hubby & I recently bought a 1st gen Ody & we've been wondering how strong it is & how it would cope in a side impact crash, especially with having our son in the back a lot of the time.

Being in the UK means we don't have access to a lot of this kind of information, and whilst we know no car is truly safe, it's a little bit of peace of mind for us, so thank you :)
