: Help with PAX Wheel replacement

Greetings,

The Honda dealer told me that the only RIM that can be used to replace the special PAX Rims is the Acura MDX rims. That they will accept the sensors and then I can but any tires I want.

He did not know the exact details, year, model etc, and also said he really shouldn't even be telling me about this as an option. But he also knew about the $1100 and 4 trips to replace my first set.

If someone who knows how to do this could post the instructions, please do. I have about 10K left on my second set, '06 with 64K Miles...

Many Thanks

PS other than the wheels, this is no doubt the best van I have owned and will buy another one when I hit 80K Miles.

I really appreciate your response.

I'll come back and post what I actually mount, but from what I saw, I can pick any rims (so long as the fit) (may need lugs) and just move the sensors.

Awesome, thanks again

Remember to get the SPARE tire when you change to standard rims. Otherwise, you'll need an AAA membership.

Hi,
I tried to email you directly, and I'll try thru the forum too.
Do you still have any 18" rims left for sale? And do you have any tires you recommend?

You can try and call his phone number too. I am pretty sure he has some sets of rims.

I'm new to this club. I also posted this same information on the Odyclub site.

Just recently purchased 2006 Touring with 24,000 miles on the clock, and of course, it had the PAX system. The tires were 65% worn at that mileage and I was planning a trip to St. Louis and didn't want to be stuck in some small town with a dead run-flat tire that nobody could replace or even begin to repair (even if they did happen to have the Michelin tire sitting there!).

Thanks to everyone for getting me up to speed on the cost/concerns and options of considering a PAX replacement - it helped with negotiating the price of the vehicle. I located the wheels on Tire Rack that I thought looked most similar to the OEM Touring wheels, both in style and size. They were the Sport Edition SE 14, 18x8 with 245/55/18. I had to go with the BF Goodrich's, since they were half the cost of next cheapest tire and had decent specs - my biggest concern when buying tires is longevity (mileage) and quietness. They are quiet, and with a rating of 620, they should go at least 50k miles. As far as communicating with the Tire Rack, either on the phone, or online, just pretend that your Touring is an EX model, and you will have no problems getting the correct replacement.

The good thing about buying a set wheels and tires from the Tire Rack is that they will mount and balance without charge before shipping. I brought everything in to the Honda dealer, who broke down the PAX wheels and the SE14's, (without disturbing the original Tire Rack balance), installing the original Touring TPMS sensors in the new wheels. I had some issues on my first test run with slight steering wheel vibration between 65-73mph, so I had the Honda dealer "re-seat" the bead and re-balance both front tires, and the problem went away.

I made the 3000+ miles to St. Louis without a hitch with the tires and wheels. Of course, before I left, I found an unused temporary spare (donut) for $100 at an east coast junkyard, and bought the hardware to mount it at a large online Honda dealer at half the cost my local dealer charged, including freight.

Cosmetic/performance comments: at first the wheels looked too big for the van, but after 3 weeks, they are starting to look like they belong. I chose the 18's because I wanted to have better handling over a better ride. The OEM PAX wheels are equivalent to just under 18". As it turns out, the ride is spot on, a bit like the BMW 5 series wagon (another Touring, by the way) I had prior to the Honda Touring; firm, but compliant, not jarring at all. Very European feeling suspension characteristics. Handles higher speed bends on the highway well, as long as you have the kids and drinks buckled in nicely. Keep in mind, those sidewalls are still 55% of the treadwidth in profile, so there's plenty of cushion (5.5") between your wheel rim and the rough roads. Biggest problem is finding center caps that fit the smaller diameter SE-14 openings, that have the Honda emblem on them - currently looking into decals that stick on the SE14 caps. Any help here would be appreciated. Cost for mounted wheels and tires from TR was $988.39, including shipping. Honda dealer charged $100 to do their part of the job. Note: SE-14's come with new lug nuts, required centering rings, and a lug nut installation tool.

I will post some pictures so that you can see what the SE-14's @ 18" size look like on a real Odyssey - this is something I couldn't find in my research, which might have been helpful. To see other photos, go to:

This week I just replaced the PAX system on my 2006 Odyssey. With the help of Tim Jones, who's information you will find on this site, everything went perfectly. His accurate information and help made the process very easy and the results are great. I would recommend him to anyone looking to do this change.

I used 18" Acura wheels and the 235/55/18 tire size that he suggested. The van rides so much better and looks much better than stock. Thanks again Tim.

Isnt this as simple as asking for:
Bolt Pattern
Width
Diameter
Offset
Backspace

Whats the above for the PAX rim?

Then go shopping?

Hi,
PAX is the break through run flat technology specially designed in such a way to keep the driver more safe than the ordinary breaks.
I like this technology and will adopt it soon.
Thanks

Can anyone tell me how to tell if my (new to me) Ody Touring has PAX? I've just purchased a used 2008 and the window sticker says it originally shipped w/ 235/60 R17 102H all season tires, so I think I'm safe...but I'm not sure.

I tried search and couldn't find anything specific. Sorry to thread jack.
