Has anyone heard of a factory installed spark plug blowing out on an 05 Odyssey? Just happened the other night when my wife was driving, got it towed to the dealer and they just showed me the destroyed coil the plug exited through. The plugs haven't been touched since we bought it new, can't believe this would ever happen with a Honda. Any thoughts?

Did it strip the threads in the head? Hopefully not. I think I have heard of somethin like this ONCE before on another ody forum. I will have to do some digging at the other site. What did honda say?
I found the link, here it is http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46564&highlight=spark+plug

still in talks with Honda but they sound like they want to help. It did strip the threads but the dealer was able to install a helicoil. Hopefully that's a decent fix.

I went through the link to the other post you'd provided and it sound exactly like what had happened with us. Thank you so much for the help, kind of confirms what my dad always said.... never buy a first year model. Thanks again, this was a huge help.

I don't really think first year model had anything to do with this. I think it was a flaw in the machining or the material.

Dad got his opinions as a Chrysler mechanic, never would buy one and never would buy a 1st year model of anything. I'm not gonna argue with him, but I think you're right.

That saying generally points towards stuff like this stuff from the website. http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46092

Just little problems that you get from a first year model car. I know what you are talking about. Also yeah its hard to argue with parents.

Well, just got off the phone with Honda customer service, they said they won't cover anything. I honestly thought they'd do better than this, given there's a history of this happening with this engine. Disappointed doesn't really describe how I feel. $1500 bill for a helicoil, coil, plug and new fuse block is gonna be a bit of a hit to the pocketbook.

WOW I am surprised. Honda a lot of times goodwills repairs. But it is a hit and miss. I guess get it fixed and enjoy the van, sorry. Why are they replacing the fuse block?

they said it shorted out the fuse block, hopefully they kept it, I'm picking it up today and will be interested in seeing the parts.

Well, I got a response back from Honda after writing them a letter. Long story short, they absolutely refused to offer anything to keep me as a customer. Since I do my own service, that was used against me since there was no dealership record of service. They stood by the servicing dealership regarding what the proper fix was, new head vs helicoil.
Honda held all the cards and could've offered almost anything and I'd have stayed a loyal Honda fan, (extended warranty on that cylinder repair, cash, discount on a new head, etc). I don't know what the cost is to get a new customer but it's got to be far less expensive to keep an existing one.
So much for worry free driving from here on out, when is that Helicoil gonna fail?
I'd like to thank those of you who offered your suggestions, this is a great forum.
Guess I'll keep my eyes out for good used head and plan on replacing it at the 100k servicing.

Sorry Honda turned you down. They are wierd. Somepeople are way out of warrenty on there tranny and they help but in your case they don't:confused:. How many miles do you have on your van and did you already do the helicoil?

Had the same thing happen to us in Nov of '09. Our 2005 blew the sparkplug, broke the coil left us standed on a out of state trip. We found a dealer and it was fixed in a week, but cost over $1800.00, and included the head being replaced. It appeared that sparkplug had been firing to the side until it had eaten away at the threads. When it could no longer hold, it blew straight out, breaking the coil. We had 75k miles on the van at that point. Honda would do nothing. The dealer in Ceder Rapids, IA helped out all they could. At the time I could not find any post about this happening to anyone else.
