My Wife got a flat (a nail in the tire) and drove on the low tire wiping out the side wall of the oem michelins LX4's. I needed to buy at least 2 tires to replace in pairs. We just turned 32,000 miles on them and the tread was pretty worn, but about 5k mikes maybe still left on them.
The best price to get new michelins was at Costco: with NYS tax, disposal fees and installation was $318 for two tires.
I hated how loud the michelins were on concrete highways, you couldn't hear yourself think. You had to turn up the radio so loud, to drowned out the noise of the tires. I was not crazy about putting michelin's on again, although they were an ok tire.
I read many posts here and on Tirerack & 1010 Tire, on the Yoko's Avid TRZ's and the Kumho KR21's both sized to match the existing 235-65-R16s.
Most reviews on the TRZ's were positive however after a couple thousand miles people commented on how noisy the TRZ's became like the michelins singing on concrete. I could not find any negatives on the KR21's except for a balance issue on one review, which I would chalk up to a bad install or a defective tire, which would easily be fixed.
So I, pulled the trigger on the Kumho KR21's - for all four tires.
I did not my wife and kids riding on 2 good michelins and two poor ones in the coming winter.
NY Discount tire gave me the best deal on the Kumho's and the Yoko's. The Yokos were $12 more a tire, so I went the KR21's based on the reviews and saving $48 plus tax.
Out the door price: with NYS tax, tire disposal fees, mounting and balancing and putting the donut spare back in hiding was $381.
NY Discount tire gave me a 10% discount for paying in cash. Verses the $318 from Costco for only 2 Michelins, going with the KR21's only cost me $63 more for 4 new tires. :D
The Kumhos, also came with 20k mile Road Hazard Warranty: Any flat, blow out of any kind or defect, they will fix or replace for free... Tire rotation with NY Discount is free as well for the life of the tires.
Tires are rated for 85k miles we'll see.
Kumho KR21 are a good looking tire - sporty look, they seem to make the steering more responsive. So far very quiet at highway speeds... Good in the rain so far. Fairly aggressive tread pattern, so it looks like it will be good in the snow.
I'll have to wait for the snow and more miles, and comment again on the KR21's.
Happy so far!!!
