Is it safe to further separate the roof rack crossbars than recommended by the instructions on a 2003 Honda Odyssey? My wife has a new kayak and it would be helpful with the transporting balance if we could separate the crossbars further apart than the "Mark" indicated on Honda's instructions.

i "widened" the distance between the crossbars on our '09.

i think i went +1" on both sides.
